Sensible eating after the holidays

Pots and Pans

ACCORDING to recent surveys, Pinoys are very optimistic of 2012 and surely, that is a very positive and good sign for all of us, despite all the trials and tragedies that we all experienced last 2011.
I would consider most of us to be happy people. Even during calamities and the like, we are still able to maintain our sanity and smile. We even laugh at our misfortunes. A good trait, indeed.
Most of us can handle adverse situations quite well and with God’s grace, persist and endure hardships and come out productive as well. We try to make use of what we got and continue living.
2012. Yes, maybe this would be a better year. We always believe that the new year will bring us luck, better life, better future and we do cling to that ray of hope. And somehow, we manage to live to tell the tale.
The holiday season is over but somehow we still fill it in the air. Maybe not for all of us, but deep down inside us, we still acknowledge its presence in us.
For those who didn’t have much during these trying times, I am sure nonetheless that we did have a fairly good celebration, be it with lots of food or just with our family and friends.
And for those who had relatively a lot of food (and now, leftovers), it would be the time to recycle or come up with new dishes using what was left.
On the other hand, those who over-ate would have probably gained so much unwanted pounds and now is the time to lose them either by lessening food intake, exercising and the like.
What I am trying to say is that, it is now the moment when we also have to “cleanse,” “purify” or “detoxify” our body system.
But how? It doesn’t have to be abrupt. Doing some small healthy changes in our lifestyles and food intake can make a big difference.
After those greasy, fattening and sweet food, we can start by eating healthy but still delicious. Say for example, we can have oatmeal in the morning with some fruits and maybe with a slice of toast.
Lunch and dinner can be composed of clear soups with some vegetables and a few slices of meat. In between snacks can include again some fruits, crackers and steamed vegetables or root crops like sweet potatoes.
Drink a lot of fluids. Water, green tea and real fruit juices. Definitely not the sweet iced teas! Soda is definitely a no-no!
Walk, walk and walk. If one prefers to go to the gym, so be it. And make sure one doesn’t overdo it. It is not necessarily true that one has to experience pain to gain the benefit of the regimen. I have known of people who got hurt instead in trying to over-exert and overdo what they can’t do.
And this is very true to people who are say, 40 years and above. Try to do things slowly and gradually increase the level. But then again, go see a doctor before starting anything. Just to be on the safe side.
In a couple of weeks it will be “Chinese New Year” and I am sure, there will be food again on the tables. Remember, moderation is the key. Enjoy the food but try to limit portions.
So, as the start of 2012, let us all stay safe, healthy and continue to pray for a better future for all of us.
