Graduation celebrations

Pots and Pans
Tuesday, March 20, 2012
GRADUATION ceremonies are now being commenced in all school and universities nationwide. Some as early as last week and some won’t be till next week or towards the end of the month.
It is always a milestone in our lives, be the graduates or the parents, who at times are more excited than the graduates themselves. I can always say I belong to the “excited” group because I can feel how a parent would feel. It doesn’t matter whether it is pre K, kindergarten, basic education, high school, college or graduate school.
But I would say that seeing your small child/children graduate is a very proud moment for us. The achievements the child received, the experience of going through day-to-day classes and all in-betweens. It might not register in the child’s mind as much, but for us parents, it is truly an unforgettable encounter.
How much more if one graduates from college? After years of sacrifice, years of waking up early in the morning and spending sleepless night for assignments, requirements and projects, it is time to say goodbye to the institution that molded and made what we all become.
And as proud parents, we did our part and hopefully, very well indeed in bringing up these children to become what they are, what they can become and what they can contribute to the society as well. After years of being in a protected environment, it is now time to explore and feel what the world has to offer.
It can be a cruel world if one is not equipped to face the realities of life. But on the other hand, it is just the beginning for everyone. This is just the beginning for a new cycle in life. Finding a job, succeeding in it and making a name for oneself. And not to forget, enjoying the job, too.
So as we all celebrate this grandiose occasion, what do we prepare? It is and will always be the presence of “lechon” and then pancit or any type of noodles (who will ever forget spaghetti?). Maybe a sprinkling of humba or adobo, salad (be it chicken macaroni or fruit), caldereta, lumpia shanghai and many more. Fruits, cakes, cupcakes and other desserts complete the meal.
Some may opt for going to a restaurant to celebrate, which is fine. No more plates to wash, no venue to prepare and nothing to clean up after. How clever. It might turn up a bit expensive, but for families who are always tied up with time, this would be the best thing to do.
Try to add some fresh colored greens to your meal and more fresh fruits if doable. According to some studies, fruits are best eaten before a meal to aid digestion. No wonder I used to see my dad eat several pieces of fruits before a meal, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. It is now making a lot of sense to me.
What are celebrations without “inuman”? Although this is not something I would recommend, it has been a “tradition” (as some may put it this way) for a lot of us. Just be reminded that always drink moderately. And always remember, don’t drink when driving to prevent accidents. For the health conscious, why not have red wine instead?
As said, this is truly an unforgettable circumstance in our lives. And what about photos and videos? Surely, there will be a lot of memories to be captured in “digital” cameras. I cannot imagine anyone without a hand held camera or a cellphone without a camera at this age and time! And speaking of cameras and cellphones, these gadgets can also acquire videos, too!
So, what’s next with these obtained photos and videos? Well, it should be in all our social networking sites even before the celebration is over! With 3G and 4G’s capabilities on cellphones, Ipads, Ipods, Iphones all over, who can beat that?
To all the graduates, congratulations and welcome to the real world! To the parents, best wishes for a job well done and may you continue to support your children’s endeavor.
