WAS there a time in your life that you wanted to eat something really sweet, salty, sour, bitter, spicy, or crunchy, crispy, and maybe all of these altogether at one time? I mean, really, really wanted to eat although you know you are already full to your throat?
Craving: a desire, longing, yearning, appetite, hunger for something.
I know I did have my own shares of cravings a lot of times and even until now I must admit it is still there. Like after a meal, it would be nice to have something sweet. Like a slice of cake (deep luscious chocolate cake or decadent cheesecake would be perfect!), perhaps an ice cold smoothie or halo halo, or just plain vanilla ice cream with chunks of chocolate chips and brownies, drizzled with chocolate fudge sauce. Wow! Wishful thinking!
I am pretty sure sweets would come in number one. Chocolates! Who can resist these? I like it better with nuts and rice crispies, and with a bit of caramel would be heavenly! Cookies. Chocolate chip and nuts cookies. Brownies, Nut bars, Crepes, Pies or candies.
Sugar overload! See people eating cakes and gulping soda with it for snack? Anyway, I know we can only eat so much, so everything is just lip service. We wish we could, but I doubt if we really could. That is why, some desserts are meant to be eaten in small portions accompanied by plain coffee, tea, or water. Lots of water.
But then there are always better and healthier alternatives to the above mentioned goodies. Say, natural fruits, sherbets and honeyed nuts instead? That should at least serve it purpose at some time.
There are instances when we have the appetite for something salty, especially when we get to see the peanut vendor for instance. Or maybe the guy that is selling crispy yet salty cholesterol-laden chicken skin! Just perfect! Or maybe those store-bought packaged crunchy salt-filled snack items? And reality is, there is just so much around us. Look at your friendly neighborhood store, groceries and supermarkets. Aisles and aisles of junk food to choose from.
Maybe it is because we needed that crunch feel in our mouth, which of course blends well with either something sweet or salty.
What about something sour? Green mangoes for instance. There are so much local fruits that give us the pleasure of enjoying this longing. Santol, Lumboy, pineapple, macopa, dalandan, grapefruit, calamansi, mangosteen, siriguelas. Aren’t you glad they are all natural? And yet I know some who still dip some of these fruits in a mixture of vinegar, soy sauce and sugar for that added taste.
Bitter food? I can only think of a few. Ampalaya, olives and unsweetened cocoa. And I am pretty sure, only very few would look forward to this type of food!
Think about this and try to put yourself in this situation. What would you desire if you are watching a TV show or movie? Or maybe playing some games at home? Popcorn? Nuts? Chips? Fruits? Chicharon? Or maybe real food like pasta and chicken with rice?
What would you be putting in your mouth if you were with a bunch of friends, let say in a coffee shop or bistro? Bet it would be something sweet with a cup of latte or cappuccino. Perhaps a healthy sandwich would be a better choice. But, is that what you really wanted?
It is just so interesting to imagine the endless possibilities of the different food cravings available for us to enjoy and share. Again, for our own health sake, we just have to eat moderately and enjoy life to the fullest! Moderation is the key!
